Oh no, one of my favourite English players wont be going to the World Cup. I don't believe it!

George,

You are most welcome, I think as we near the start of the tournament, more participants will be joining in their comments/predictions, so far we have yours:

1. France
2. Germany
3. Brazil
4. Argentina

and then mine: (see #reply-4589436)

"Brazil will repeat, defeating Germany (if I followed the right sequence of games)

Italy will defeat the Netherlands for third place."

or:

1. Brazil
2. Germany
3. Italy
4. The Netherlands

That makes 2 teams in our "predictions", although for Brazil in different places. We seem to agree on Germany to finish in second place.

In your prediction, you are placing Argentina, which it is a definite possibility, however, I think you are giving France quite a generous placing, that even with the 'home" advantage, the best I could see them is fourth, (being extremely generous and imaginative).

I have a friend (Alain) in the south of France, (Toulouse), who I am sure is very excited the World Cup is in France, I can see him arguing with me for having expressed the above comment. But I am sorry to say, France is not up to being the world champion just yet....

The US tied with Scotland (0 x 0), now that was a surprise to me, and I believe it bodes very well for the US.

I am beginning to believe that the US is going to surprise many people and will probably perform much better than what most people are giving credit to them for...

Your comment re: the England team, the loss of a strong player could be psychologically very negative for the team. However, personally, I would side with the trainer, as having a "Prima Dona" has never been a positive element in soccer, (nor in any other sport), i.e.: going for a "night on the town drinking" with only weeks before the start of the most important tournament in the sport, is not only irresponsible, but highly arrogant on this player's part (Paul Gaiscone).

The first two or three games for England will be critical in reaffirming their status as a winning team, even without Gaiscone.

I would like to make a couple of corrections to my first post in re: the history of the World Cup matches.

The final score between Brazil and Sweden (1950), I have it as:
5 x 1 for Brazil.

The correct score was: 5 x 2 for Brazil.

The other correction is the final in 1990, in Italy, I have it as Germany 1 x 0 Italy.

The correct final was Germany 1 x 0 Argentina

For some late breaking news related the world cup go to:

france98.com

There are some interesting items, particularly in the result of some "friendlies", giving a glimpse of what is to come, a few examples:

Cameroon 2 x 0 Luxemburg

Chile 3 x 2 Tunisia

Jamaica looses against "Caribbeans All Stars"

Brasil ties with Atl‚tico Bilbao. (1 x 1)

Angelo Peruzzi the # 1 choice goal keeper for Italy, injured (and OUT for 4 weeks), not good for the Italians....

These and more news at the above site.

Enjoy.

Z.

Hey George,

Good to see ya.

I disagree about Romario. Excellent stricker, he can finish off a game in one second. Gets the job done! Definitive balance for the Brazilian team...

I am also rooting -I always root for the underdogs!*- for the African teams. They play with great style and are great offensive teams. Cameroon and Nigeria should be great to watch. They will drive crazy any team that plays against them...

Regards

Victor

* Go Doc Go Doc Go Doc..I am also rooting for FTEL...
