On the question of the Indian/Pakistan nuclear situation and the analysis. We should remember that few times in the last 50 years the threat of nuclear attackWAS used to achieve political and strategic goal. One was of course the Cuban Missile crisis. One much lesser known event was the nuclear blackmail of Britain and France by Bulganin in 1956. The interesting lesser know fact is that Eisenhauer did not put Bulganin in its place, and outraged for being left out of the deliberations regarding the British/French Suez adventure, he let the ultimatum stand without an appropriate American response. This ultimatum resulted of course in Britain and France withdrawing from the Suez and France becoming determined to become a nuclear power on its own, knowing it cannot rely on the US nuclear umbrella to further its strategic goals.

I would not be surprised to find out that other Nato countries (such as Germany) have their own nuclear capabilities due to that episode.
