I don't know how many patents IBM, HP or CPQ/DEC/TDM hold -- nor do I care. I don't own them (although I do hold some CPQ LEAPS). I own DELL, so that's the one I track. If you want to know about CPQ or IBM, ask them.

For the record, I have never said that DELL was a huge R&D powerhouse. I did not buy DELL because I thought it competed with Bell Laboratories. I do think it noteworthy that DELL, "Just a boxmaker", has 28 patents awarded this year.

Therefore I track it for the thread. It provides another item of data for the long-term holders. And it may help the shorts who claim that "anyone can copy DELL's business and operations model" to begin to understand that it isn't necessarily quite as easy as they had been (mis)lead to believe.
