NEC to build 300-mm wafer fab in California

By David Lammers

TOKYO - Though it's keeping a wary eye on demand from the systems
market, NEC Corp. is expected to announce today that it will build a
300-mm (12-inch) wafer fab at its Roseville, Calif., facility that will go into
production in 2002, when 1-Gbit DRAMs begin their volume ramp.

NEC senior executive vice president Hajime Sasaki was scheduled to
appear with California Gov. Pete Wilson at a Monday morning press
briefing on the steps of the California Statehouse to announce the plan to
build the 300-mm facility, to be called the G-line (the "G" is for gigabit).
With an expected investment of $1.4 billion and employment of about 700,
the G-line is the first announced 300-mm wafer fab by a Japanese
company, though many companies have projected a shift to the larger
wafers in the gigabit era. The initial design rule is expected to be 0.15
micron, with a shift to 0.13 micron as argon-fluoride excimer steppers
advance.
