I would say we are in a volatile phase of gold stock
where the prices have been holding up but are not likely
to continue unless good good news is forthcoming. Dome
is all good news last year. Will this year hold out for
them? Puts and calls at the same price, a "straddle", bets
long on volatility, ie: infers that the price has to change
one way or the other. Derivative leverage protects the
losing side.

Another way is to buy the stock and buy some puts at
the same strike price. This way if the stock falls the
puts shore you up. Still again you may write or sell some
calls. If they are not excercised you made the price of
the stock fall anyway. Works well in stable stocks.
