EXXON / MTBE concerned and looking to clean it up.. A very close friend of mine works for an environmental consulting firm in Pa. One of the larger companies that they do work for is EXXON. His comment was that EXXON is very concerned about the effect that MTBE has on the environment , especially the UWT (underground water table). It takes on average 150K to 250K to clean up the average spillage created by an avg. service station over the course of ten years. (life expectancy of in-ground fuel tank) But this is only if the leakage stays above bedrock and has not seeped into the UWT. Once MTBE has found it's way below bedrock the area(s) which feed off of the UWT are written off as totally unsafe. If by chance a station should have a major tank blow out then the clean up costs could go as high as 1mil.for an average spill of 10,000 gal (the avg. size of many service station in-ground tanks). I know I haven't asked when my P's can convert or if I can exercise my W's sorry..... TJG
