After posting that message, I realised that it could be misinterpreted. I guess I should clarify my point. I didn't mean to imply that DEC's AlphaServer line was going to be cancelled by Compaq soon or anything like that. What I meant was that Compaq sees Intel chips running NT as its server and workstation future, and Alpha is not and will not be the main thing at Compaq.

I would expect CPQ to drive a 64 bit strategy not a Merced strategy. They have the ability to drive enough Alpha volume to make the chip viable in its own right. I agree that CPQ will also have a strong Merced story but they will be one of many with Merced, where they can have a number of distinctive advantages with Alpha. I don't know exactly where it will all fall out but I would expect Alpha to have a larger rather than smaller role under CPQ.
