These guys continue to make me nervous....... LuxSonor Adopts Super VCD Specification Company Expected to Release First Super VCD Prototype System in Early June FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 1998--LuxSonor Semiconductors, Inc., a digital multimedia company providing ''system-on-a-chip'' solutions for the consumer and computer markets, today announced that it has fully adopted the Super VCD (SVCD) specification released by the China Ministry of Information Industry (MII). LuxSonor has been working closely with MII over the past four months to develop and finalize an open VCD specification, defining the next-generation standard for the video CD market. Major VCD component manufacturers such as Philips and Sony are also expected to adopt the Super VCD standard. ''We are excited to have worked closely with MII to bring the Super VCD specification to market,'' said Harold Liang, chairman and CEO of LuxSonor. ''The availability of this open specification, unlike the proprietary specifications proposed by certain manufacturers, will provide an entire cross-section of Chinese VCD manufacturers with an attractive new market for the peak selling season, while offering consumers greater video quality at affordable prices.'' Whereas existing VCD players are based on MPEG-1 video compression, the Super VCD standard incorporates advanced MPEG-2 video quality into a CD format, delivering consumers greater entertainment value at a reasonable cost. And unlike the DVD market, a large number of low-cost Super VCD titles conforming to the MII specification are expected to become available in China in the next few months. LuxSonor anticipates that a number of VCD manufacturers will bring Super VCD players to market by August or September, in time for volume shipments during the holiday selling season. LuxSonor Semiconductors, Inc. is a fabless semiconductor design company that develops single-chip solutions for the consumer and computer markets. Launched in late 1997, the company's LS100 family of products is being designed into a growing number of VCD players, several of which are now shipping in volume into the Chinese market. Based in Fremont, California, LuxSonor has offices in Hong Kong, Taipei, and Shenzhen, China. The company employs more than 70 people worldwide and is privately held. LuxSonor can be reached in the U.S. at 510/683-4668 or at www.luxsonor.com.
