Jim - Agree, the big problem seems to be software. VMS is pretty long in the tooth. Alpha has a big CPU advantage but has always had problems getting the horsepower to the wheels (I/O issues mostly). Alpha does have a better memory architecture than either IA32 or Merced, is a lot closer to the big SPARC architectures in overall bandwidth. CPQ will need to do a lot of work to pull it all together from a systems standpoint, and they also have some big credibility gaps as an enterprise player which Digital does not completely solve.
