DVD players and titles available in the UK ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Region 2 PAL DVDs are now available in stores across the UK, and manufacturers such as Sony and Pioneer have released new players. Around twenty DVDs are available in stores such as Virgin and HMV, as well as mail order suppliers (please see the software suppliers page for a list of region 2 suppliers). Prices range from œ18 to œ25 in most stores, sometimes above the recommended retail price. The same titles are available mail order from around œ15. More titles are due to be released in the near future and it is hoped 200 will be available by the end of the year. <Picture: Panasonic A350>New players are available from Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic and Toshiba, although the high-street stores such as Dixons and Comet do not seem to be stocking any at the moment. The Panasonic DVD-A100 and Thomson/Denon clones are joined by the œ699 Panasonic DVD-A350, which has built-in Dolby Digital and MPEG 5.1 (Musicam) decoders and a 10-bit video DAC. Sony have released two players - the œ499 DVP-S315 and œ599 DVP-S715. Both have 10-bit video DACs and 24-bit audio and can output Dolby Digital and MPEG 5.1 to external decoders. The DVP-S715 is Sony's flagship player and has a dual-optical pickup and Digital Noise Reduction. This player is available in a champagne colour as well as black. Pioneer have released region 2 versions of their DVL-909 DVD/Laserdisc combination player and the DVD-only DV-505. The combination player retails at around œ899 whilst the DV-505 is œ449. Both have 10-bit video DACs and 20-bit audio, and the DVL-909 can play both PAL and NTSC Laserdiscs. Toshiba have released their SD-3107 player as a region 2 only machine, which also has 10-bit video DAC and 20-bit audio and costs around œ549. It should be noted that all the above players can play PAL and NTSC DVDs, but only region 2 i.e. PAL from Europe and NTSC from Japan - not the United States. However, many suppliers such as CodeFreeDVD and Link Electronics are able to modify players to play DVDs from all regions. Please check their web sites for details.
