Bay Networks to Buy Netwave Technologies for $10 Million

Santa Clara, California, June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Bay Networks
Inc. agreed to buy closely held Netwave Technologies Inc. for $10
million to acquire wireless technology that lets workers connect
to corporate computer networks without phone lines.

Netwave makes products that plug into personal computers
and, using wireless transmissions similar to that in cordless
phones, connect them to so-called local area networks, or LANs.
Bay, the No. 2 maker of networking equipment, didn't specify
whether it would use cash or stock to pay for the purchase.

Like larger rivals Cisco Systems Inc. and 3Com Corp., Bay
Networks is looking to expand its product line to offer corporate
customers equipment for all parts of their networks.

The adoption of a worldwide standard for wireless LAN
technology and advances in making wireless transmissions private
and secure ''make wireless a legitimate and attractive
(networking) option for corporations,'' Bay Chief Executive Dave
House said in a statement.

Bay had revenue of $547.2 million for the quarter ended in
March. Shares rose 7/8 to 27 3/8 in midday trading.

Bay officials couldn't be reached for comment.
