Mr. Spurway- WRT <$17 or $18 will be as low as it goes> Last year I doubted a serious price war. It is now obvious that INTC and AMD will both sell at very close to Marginal cost of Production(and although illegal perhaps below) - to try to keep their fabs running at capacity - while there is insufficient demand at any price to do that -- If the companies gave away the chips(CPUS), I doubt that demand(For computer systems) would increase by 10% -- For an entry level system, that would mean a reduction in price from $699.00 to $624.00, after all.

The only flexibility, it seems to me, is:
The home builder who might be willing to buy a $100 MOBO & $100 chip to replace the parts he bought last year for $200 and $400 respectively - and gain 50% frame rate in Quake-II. That builder can offer an upgrade to friends for $100 - $300( the upgrade may need a $100 2G hard drive, or 16M of memory) but is good for all parties. - I doubt that the scale will support 65M CPUs - as I doubt that there are 10M hard core quakers in the country!

This business is going down the tubes - from oversupply and lack of restraint of all parties involved - IMHO.

I heve mostly agreed with you in the past, and perhaps the JD action on INTC will have pricing impacts, but I am coming to think that these two companies are practicing MAD(of AMD).

Sorry to be so negative.
