Nortel (Northern Telecom) Launches Passport 6100 To Replace Time Division Multiplexer Networks Facing Mandatory Year 2000 Upgrades PR Newswire - June 02, 1998 13:17 NT NTL. %TLS V%PRN P%PRN Enterprise Bandwidth Manager Supercharges Small-to Medium-Sized Enterprise Networks DALLAS, June 2 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel (Northern Telecom) today announced that its Enterprise Data Networks business unit has launched the Passport 6100 series for small-to medium-sized enterprise customers who are facing the challenges of exploding bandwidth requirements and non-year 2000 compliant T1/T3 multiplexers. Nortel is offering the Passport 6100 series and a compelling Network Supercharge incentive program to assist customers by eliminating the need to upgrade outdated multiplexers that will likely waste more time, money and bandwidth in the near future. The powerful, scalable Passport 6100 series of enterprise bandwidth manager switches consolidates frame relay, voice and transparent data services onto a single, cost-effective network. It eliminates the need for multiple parallel networks and increases network availability. The Passport 6100's advanced bandwidth management capabilities enable multiple service types to share the same trunk. Bursty traffic can use un-subscribed bandwidth. Sophisticated priority and interrupt queuing on leased line trunks can reduce delay variances to transport time sensitive traffic, such as voice and video, with very high quality. ''The Gartner Group expects that by the year 2001, 85% of TDM networks will have migrated to public Frame Relay/ATM or private ATM-like networks,'' said Bob Hafner, vice president and research director, the Gartner Group. This rationale is based on the pressure for network hardware and software to be year 2000 compliant, and on the economics of public and private ATM and frame-cell networks. The Passport 6100 series is a century compliant(x) choice for enterprise customers who are interested in the benefits of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology, but who may not be able to justify an ATM investment based on today's traffic demands. The Passport 6100 series can seamlessly upgrade to a Passport 6400 Series to take advantage of additional services such as InterLAN switching and public and private ATM as the needs of the business grow. With planned availability in July 1998, the fully scalable Passport 6100 series includes models 6120, 6140 and 6180 with three, five and 16 slots respectively. Models 6120 and 6140 include four serial ports to support transparent data services, frame relay, and data traffic as well as a voice interface (DS1/E1) supporting 24/30 voice channels for PBX traffic. The Passport model 6180 includes eight serial interface ports and a voice interface. Additional interface cards may be added to meet growing enterprise communications requirements at a pace that makes sense for the business. For small-to medium-sized enterprises, the Passport 6100 series provides a cost-effective entry point into Nortel's Power Networks. The Passport 6100 series is being introduced with a comprehensive marketing program, aggressively priced starting in the mid $20K range. Orders may be placed immediately with Nortel authorized resellers for shipment beginning in July.
