"DESTINATION 2000 -- AIR CANADA

The Search for Embedded Systems (reprinted from Dialogue 2000, Issue #12, March 20, 1998

Air Canada has begun a world wide inventory process to identify potential embedded systems in every area of the company. An embedded system is defined as any equipment that contains a computer chip to manage a specific function. For example, a hear pacemaker contains an embedded system. Kick-off sessions in each Branch are really helping the process, explained Peter Pouw, IT Specialist. People walk into the meeting unaware of the situation and walk out well informed and ready to help.

A special kit has been developed to help teams within the Branches tackle the process of identifying the various elements and equipment that should be checked. The inventory process is expected to be completed by the end of May. All information is currently being captured in a database, which will allow Air Canada to contact all manufacturers, suppliers and service providers to verify the Year 2000 readiness of specific embedded systems. Our advice is, if you are in doubt, list the item, says Perter. It's better to check it and be safe."

hmmm....sounds positive on the surface, but to be finished an inventory by May sounds a little late.
