Ref: Regan's SDI,Gulf War,Patriot and National Security. Gunther: The Strategic Defence Initiative envisioned by Regan and his administration would have been a fool proof(?) safety mechanism for the country but the Soviets at the time were vehemently opposed to it but more importantly the congress did not go along with it so now we have no SDI,perhaps it was too expensive or whatever. Now the U.S has a less ambitious plan to make a 'anti-ICBM-missile' or something like that,I don't know the name of it yet.They have recently test fired it but did not work,some say they jumped the gun before the technology was perfected but this will be done and will be deployed in all likelihood in a few years or sooner. But I don't think that is the issue here,as protecting the U.S from foreign invasion was the concern then I think the U.S has more than enough 'stuff' in its arsenal to do so and besides I don't think anybody will be foolish enough even to try it. I think the main issue here is extraneous and unrelated to national security and is global in scope. It has more to do with leadership,influnece,trade,peace,proliferation and the like on a global scale. Ref:Gulf War If you are talking about SDI in relation to Gulf war and the role of the Patriot missile,I am sorry to say Patriot only worked 40% of the time thereby missing the target 60% of the time. Besides we were only dealing with an obsolete Scud missile which is basically a long tube filled with propellents and some crude explosive at the tip,hardly a sophisticated weapon. Well any way this is just my opinion.
