Mark,

I read Jess' post. He is a much respected poster. There is, as you know, an increasing body of evidence that Asia's problems run much deeper then has been acknowledged or understood before. The extent to which this is a harbinger of a world wide economic malaise is a calculation beyond my limited understandings. I have read pro and con. As usual there are almost as many opinions as there are prognosticators as to what, how, when, and where. I have hunkered down quite some time ago on the simple premise that I am, by virtue of living here, already substantially exposed. I am not here on some U.S. company ex-pat program. I have my own company and bear my own expenses. With that in mind I am therefore as invested as I want to be. Withdrawl from this "investment" means relocating my business back to the states.

You asked, "should we be afraid?" Well, fear is a relative thing. I don't think we should all go out and buy guns and canned goods (India and Pakistan aside). But I have substantially changed my investment posture. Those equities I own I view on a much shorter term basis then before. I am substantially in cash and have been since late Q1 of 97. I do believe this market will correct and I do not have strong confidence in calling out the "when". In fact, it may already be happening. As to global recession? I would have to say that the probabilities have increased over the last 12 months rather then decreased. That is about all I have real confidence in saying. I guess the old advise of "caution" still applys.

Best,

Stitch
