Its an important thing to note that the browser was a viable application category until Microsoft came along. They aren't integrating IE into the OS to be "innovative" they are doing it to force you to use their browser and thereby gain leveradge over internet content.

Why would MS want to gain leverage over internet content? I've never understood this argument, I have to admit. I'd like to hear your opinions on this. I'm not trying to start an argument over this - I really am interested.

Note that http server sales was a viable category until MS came in and started shipping it for free.

Which is why Apache is still the dominant web server?
