NTKI CEO, Larry Rosen just made a compelling argument for N2K's radical departure from traditional music retailing methods. As I posted last, everything was going to change. The fundamental difference between NTKI and retailers like CDNow, KTel, etc. is that NTKI represents the artists DIRECTLY. The others merely retail the records for record companies. NTKI IS a record company selling direct to the end consumer, effectively cutting out MANY middle-men.

Larry Rosen was an engineer for Dave Grusin, 20 years ago when they decided to start their own record company. Grusin Rosen Productions then became GRP Records, perhaps the most respected jazz record label in the world. Mr. Rosen is the right choice for NTKI's change of the way things are done, since he started from the bottom and successfully re-invented his own wheel.

He spoke of direct delivery thru the "pipelines" of the internet. [My At Home Network could not be installed due to the "bombs" allegedly placed by AOL browser when installed. I could not use Prodigy for the same reason.] Upon installation of At Home, I will be communicating over the internet at blinding speeds approaching a million bits per second. My modem could only chug out 38,000. Real time music will then be possible. When cable modems, satellite and ADSL [probably in that order] begin to proliferate, people will start getting their music, videos, music television, tv shows and you name it over the internet. It is critical to understand that the future is here. This stuff works NOW.

Phil Ramone, perhaps the most famous record producer ever, is an officer at NTKI as well. He was recently in Nashville explaining the benefits of this new music system to a conference room filled with members of the Recording Academy [record execs, producers, etc.].

Nashville's weekly newspaper that covers the entertainment around town is called the Nashville Scene. Last weeks edition is quoted as saying about the record industry here, "Nashville resists nothing so vigorously as new ideas." This seems to sum up the attitude of the industry at large, especially with respect to those "Yankees" always wanting to change things. [part of same article]

Will Nashville be ready? Will the industry at large be ready? Or will the be blind-sided when the first MAJOR act decides to go the alternative route. Garth Brooks could EASILY pull it off. And by doing so, would totally be within his character. If that were to happen without the industry being prepared, it would open the floodgates to other acts. And the industry would never recover it's domination. [Note: there is no indication that Brooks or any such artist is considering such a move. Do not start rumors.]

It is getting very interesting.
