Dragonfly -
I'm not trying to argue for Microsoft here. What I am doing is looking at how some companies have been able to survive despite the environment Microsoft has created.

I don't expect any big changes in the way Microsoft does business any time soon. The DOJ does not have a very good understanding of the issues and their track record on fixing problems in this industry, or with Microsoft, is not good.

There ought to be a way to allow innovative people to develop products which can succeed on their merits in the marketplace. Browser based internet access provided one example of how that might work - at a big netscape event in fall of 1995 I saw an enthusiasm and energy level among developers that I had not seen since the early days of the PC revolution. Many of the people I know in the industry would like to find a way to develop and grow that kind of energy as a counter to increasingly market driven bloatware.

When I find people who have intelligent views on these issues I like to stimulate a dialog. I have a lot more questions than answers on these issues and every additional viewpoint helps.
