Osicom and NEC Demonstrate Interoperability of Metro DWDM and SONET Technologies
SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 1998--Osicom Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:FIBR), today announced that it will jointly demonstrate with NEC America Inc., the interoperability of Metro dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) with SONET technologies. The demonstration will show Osicom's GigaMux(tm) Metro DWDM, interfaced with NEC's ITS-2400V high-speed SONET multiplexer, configured to transport SONET based OC-48 signals from NEC's equipment. The demonstration can be viewed next week at Osicom booth # 827, Supercomm '98, Atlanta, Georgia.
The demonstration will exhibit how the interworking between Osicom's GigaMux Metro DWDM and NEC's ITS-2400V can enable carriers to deploy DWDM systems that are optimized for the Metro and Access markets. The system configuration will be capable of transporting high survivability (2/4 fiber BLSR rings) in SONET payloads and provide carriers with the ability to provision DS3, OC-3 and OC-12 services within an OC-48 payload. The payload, in turn, can be transported over an optical network layer created by Osicom's DWDM technologies.
"Our demonstration will show carriers that successful interoperability between DWDM and SONET can be a cost-effective way to expand fiber ring capacity 32-fold," said Dr. Xin Cheng, President, Osicom Technologies. "It also highlights how Osicom and NEC are working together to create innovative solutions that help carriers achieve high survivability, modular growth in capacity, while protecting infrastructure investment."
According to Larry Eagle, vice president and general manager for NEC America's Business Development Group, "Dealing with technology companies such as Osicom is a part of NEC's ongoing interoperability strategy." He added, "Osicom is a leader in supporting DWDM for Metro network customers. Successfully interworking their technology with ours can permit us to more rapidly provide our carrier customers the ability to deploy services for metropolitan applications."
About GigaMux
The GigaMux line of DWDM transforms existing fiber from a dedicated, single-application medium into a versatile conduit capable of simultaneously transporting up to 32 independent optical channels thus increasing total bandwidth from 2.5 Gb/s to 80 Gb/s. The GigaMux system can be configured for simplex, full duplex, or a combination of simplex and duplex operation. The system supports data rates in the entire 51 Mb/s through 2.5 Gb/s range without adding equipment and transparently supports all traffic types including Switched Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, ESCON, SONET, xDSL, ATM, Frame Relay, and even proprietary digital signals.
More about NEC's ITS-2400V
The ITS-2400V Intelligent Transport System is a high speed SONET based multiplexer developed as part of NEC's Transport product line. It provides economical, flexible, and reliable OC-48 broadband transmission for network applications. The ITS-2400V architecture supports five configurations: Full Line (FL), Terminal, Line Repeater (LR), Add/Drop Mux (ADM), a 2-fiber and 4-fiber Bi-directional Line Switched Ring (BLSR). The ITS-2400V also accommodates mixed low-speed interfaces in the same shelf, converting DS3, STS-1, OC-3, and OC-12 signals into OC-48 signals without sacrificing any shelf space.
