Four times? That is a new theory I hadn't heard. John sells 100,000 shares to MM A. MM A sells 100,000 shares to Mary. 200,000 shares are reported on the volume.

Now, I have heard of prints where MMs swap back and forth to give the impression of heavy selling to scare investors. But usually, volume on NASDAQ and BB stocks is no more than 2 X "true" NYSE equivalent volume.
Assuming equal mix of buying and selling we can assume the 2X rule applies. So, a stock with 10MM shares in the float is said to have traded its float on a day where volume is 20MM.

Now, if 20MM shaes traded and 90% went off at the ask then that would be closer to trading 2 times the float, but then I would have to wonder how the MMs had that much inventory.
