They never lost their focus on mainframes. What happened was that the suggestion that networked PCs and workstations was going to supplant mainframes got to be a cacophony. That is, the idea of client server taking over everything got so widely believed that IBM had a lot of trouble selling 'frames in the early 90's. When enough people tried the networks and workstations, and found them sorely lacking in most of the features and functions mainframes are famous for, the mainframe came back.

One good thing about microprocessor based computers, whether x86, or alpha or Merced, there is nothing else
