I believe that Rockefeller had dropped out of active participation about 10 years before the breakup, but was still 'president'. He tried to resign several times because he would then have not been compelled to testify but standard management pleaded with him to stay on and he agreed. As it turned out this was a good call because his testimony was very effective and resulted in a less draconian handling of standard than some (including Teddy and Taft) wanted.
