Kevin,

One of business practices of the Evil Empire is not to give their customers with enough performance that they deserve in order to force them to upgrade in a short period of time.

Intel plans to screw their customers' pockets with HP designed Merced and won't implement any worthwhile system enhancements towards it PII family no matter how Intel names the chips. In addition, Intel has been so used to free illegal copying on their processor architectures that it would take them quite a few years to become independent.
