Not dumb, remember Schedule "D" layout - they want description, purchase price (incl comission) date, sales Price (incl comission, date) # of shares is irrelevent.

There is no tax liability until you sell the shares. If you only sold your original shares, you would get the holding period for those shares. The additional 50% is clocked from the date of the stock dividend distribution.

If the dividend was all in cash, you would be taxed in 1998.
