The reason MS wants us to use their browser is simply because the internet is HUGE. The amount of software required to run the internet is HUGE. They want this software to come from them. The easiest way for them to do that is to push their browser and proprietary extensions and protocols.

As MS has found out, browsers are like TVs. People are using them in some of the ways they use TVs. But Browsers haven't standardized yet, and probably won't for a while. Look at the fight over HDTV. Now if everyone in the country threw away their TVs and upgraded to the european standard with the vertical sync, etc. I think what would happen is either the cable/broadcast stations would give everyone a free upgrade to an american TV, or rush to fix their equipment to put out a European signal, so that someone would be there to watch it.

The people with the browsers who view proprietary content are somewhat responsible for the choice of web servers on the other end. MS wants us to use IE to view activex, netshow, asp, their version of java, and whatever else I am forgetting.

If we all do this then MS will make plenty of money selling server side software. Netscape made money doing this.
