Putting a Mack truck engine on top of Volkswagen wheels may impress ones friends and business associates but it is not going to perform well! Good analogy. A friend of mine who works at Intel described Merced as 'like a guy with body-builder arms and shoulders but skinny legs'. I like your description better.

But remember, Intel designs for the mass market. They have to balance the performance needs of each product against the cost of the technology to get there. A rough rule of thumb used to be that it was a 10X cost increase to get a 2X performance increase. Early Alpha support chips cost about 20 times as much as the similar Intel chips. Those numbers have gotten better in recent years but it always costs more to be at the edge.
