I took an early and rather reckless stab, in retrospect, at this in the Sprint thread at:

Message 4697092

I've not heard anything this morning by way of financial analysts that sheds anything new on the matter. Has anyone?

One thing that comes to my mind is that Teligent, Winstar, AART, CVUS (and even CAWS and MEME) are now highly attractive [almost demanding] prospects for FON for either direct take outs or partnering in the last mile distribution area, if they are to follow through with their announced intentions. Some retrofitting would be required to 'upgrade' <which is arguable> to ATM deliverables, but these folks have got the licenses in hand already. Anyone agree with this? Disagree? Let's hear.

Regards, Frank Coluccio

My initial reaction to Sprint's ION is a fastbreak too late. As a dumb network bigot, I have always pilloried the prospects of ATM and guffawed at the notion of per bit pricing. My prediction is that the Sprint system will prove too costly and will give way to the big dumb WDM operations with IP on lamda. But I will acknowledge that someone will make some money vending secure heavily monitored networks to large companies for mission critical operations. Perhaps Sprint will be the one. SprintPCS, incidentally, which I gather will be spun out in an IPO, is a great pure play in CDMA wireless.
