While it may not have evil intent, it squashes creativity and is killing the business of developing application software.

What? How many companies are there which exist on writing software for the Windows platform? 10,000? 50,000? More?

Furthermore, it is quite sad when consumers end up spending way too much money on crappy products when superior ones are there. I hate seeing ignorant people taken advantage of and screwed over this way. It leads to disgruntlement and a poor opinion of the software development industry. (I've seen this from my father, and both me and my mother are professional programmers! My father is tired of buying software and finding it doesn't work.)

I agree. I'm a professional programmer, and my Dad is a hapless user. But the fact is, not all MS products are inferior. My Dad uses Quattro Pro and it sucks - a lot. He had Lotus SmartSuite on his machine (which I used for some time also) and it was definitely, IMO, inferior to Office, at least for the tasks he and I were doing. I have Netscape on my machine as well as IE, and I think IE is a better product. It just works better for me. Maybe not for everyone, but it fills my needs and expectations better than Navigator.
