TOKYO (Nikkei)-Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. (6781) and Pioneer Electronic Corp. (6773) both released Monday car navigation systems equipped with double-layer DVDs capable of storing 8.5 gigabytes of data, twice the capacity of conventional digital videodiscs.

Pioneer's new system offers close-up maps of 290 Japanese cities, locations and information on 20,200 parking lots, and a search function for 49 million telephone numbers.

Matsushita Communication began selling three DVDs offering map information for eastern, western and central Japan. Each disc offers triple the data of previous versions, company officials said.
