Intel's mistake on the iAPX432 was to actually produce it.

Once it was out, it was quickly sized up as a slow poke.

However, the 432 had some incredible architectural features. I recall one demo of a 432 system, capable of housing 6 or 8 432 Processor Cards in a parallel configuration.

The system started running with one processor card and the system monitor displayed a measure of the system performance. A second card was inserted "hot" - with no power removal and no software alterations. The system software automatically recognized the presence of another system card and re-partitioned the running task and the system monitor immediately updated the faster overall system performance. This was repeated with the addition of a third, fourth and fifth system card with similar auto-recognition and re-partitioning with ever increasing system performance.

This was rather stunning - considering the time frame - 1982.
