Winners Announced for First-Ever Medical Design Excellence Awards

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--June 4, 1998--Winners of the first-ever Medical Design Excellence Awards,
a program honoring outstanding achievement in the design and engineering of medical products, were announced during a
dinner and ceremony at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on Wednesday, June 3.

A panel of six jurors selected 18 winning products in 12 categories from 230 entries. The winning products were selected
based on criteria including functional improvement, benefits to patients and users, cost effectiveness, and user-friendly design.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards are sponsored by Canon Communications, a leading publisher and trade show
producer for high-technology industries. The awards are endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America.

''The medical device industry continues to set the standard for design innovation, generating products that advance the state of
the art and improve our quality of life,'' said Canon president and chief excecutive officer William Cobert.

''The winning products cover every facet of the medical device field, demonstrating once again that design innovation in this
industry is not limited to high-end procedures or large corporations. The awards program is a natural extension of Canon's
core mission -- to promote and facilitate the advancement of medical technology.

''We fully expect next year's program to build upon this year's success as we continue to highlight the best and brightest in the
medical device field,'' Cobert said.
