I imagine that Rocket Sci's point is that from some locations, much terrestrial long distance is going to be routed via GEO's, and hence so will G* long distance calls.

I would guess that will sometimes be true but rarely. The reason for the rarely is that I imagine that most groundstations even in third world countries will have access to transoceanic fiber cables. One would suppose that such considerations would figure into the siting.

One can also imagine that for a few ground stations this will not be true, at least for some end point destinations.
