John, I would say "air" for err. I reserve the "ur" for animated writing where I would pause for a moment, like....er.....in this manner. As Lilian has indicated, both pronunciations appear to be correct in the dictionary. I have heard people say it both ways, and have understood it in context. I may have asked them to repeat it had the context not been given.

Now that I have a moment, let me join the debate on the proper pronunciation of "err", as in, "to err is human".

I personally say "ur", but be advised that when I am not watching myself, I also say "fur", that is, "fer", instead of "for".

On the other hand, perhaps the parrot is right.

P.S. Now that I think about it, those periods and commas look weird outside the quotation marks. Perhaps we need to take yet another look at this knotty question!
