Miles,

DELL, CAT, HWP, INTL, MSFT, IBM all have followed the same trail, several times. Agreed, outstanding stocks all. I would not try it with a FA poor stock. Splits per se' are deemed by co's to be a divivend of sorts (reward) to their long term shareholders.

Wade Cook has hailed this play as his newest favorite play as (he states) a post split co. will 85% or the time retrace at least 50% of its pre split price. Play the stock or play the options, both work well. I have paper traded this way, but have never had the capital to play for real. It does work.
