South Korean Labor Group To Strike As Talks With Government Fail

Dow Jones Online News, Wednesday, June 03

SEOUL -(Dow Jones)- South Korea's militant umbrella labor group said
Wednesday it would go ahead with scheduled nationwide strikes next week
as it failed to reach an agreement with the government on thorny labor
issues, including layoffs.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions also said it won't take part
in the second round of tripartite labor talks, the government plans to
launch later Wednesday with representatives of management and workers.
Earlier this week, the confederation had indicated it may call off
the strike to help President Kim Dae Jung succeed in his bid to draw
more foreign investment during his trip to the U.S.
The confederation, which claims a membership of 500,000 in auto,
shipbuilding and other heavy industries, had planned to cap a recent
series of labor strikes and protests with a large-scale strike on June
10 to protest growing layoffs.
