Like most information, it is most useful when very fresh. Being a short term trader, I've often bought on buy recommendations just to get a quick 1/4 + point. Obviously by the time I see the upgrade on Yahoo! it is old news to Wall Street...but not all of the world has been notified and made a move. If it is a solid company maybe trading somewhere in the middle of their 52 week high/low, I'm probably not looking at a lot of risk even if I missed the initial bump up. Since smaller caps aren't followed as closely as the big boys, they don't necessarily react immediately and there sometimes is an opportunity to buy before the market reacts too much.

I've had pretty good success doing this. Obviously it is very archaic compared to the guys doing Level II stuff, etc., but it's worked for me.

I've just been wondering if a service out there provided immediate notification by email (so I don't have to keep sitting on the Yahoo! page hitting the reload button) of upgrades and downgrades. Haven't found it yet.
