Viagra Seen Getting Full EU Approval This Year, Report Says

Bloomberg News
June 3, 1998, 12:35 a.m. PT

Frankfurt, June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc.'s new anti-
impotence drug Viagra is likely to gain full approval in the
European Union by year's end after clearing the first hurdle with
EU regulatory authorities, Klaus Schalkhaeuser, president of the
German Urologists Association, said in an interview with the ZDF
German television station. The urologist warned against the
treatment becoming a ''lifestyle drug,'' urging doctors to
prescribe the pills only after analyzing the exact cause of the
dysfunction. The cost of the drug, Schalkhaeuser said, should be
covered mainly by patients and not by social insurance.

Two pills aiming to compete against Pfizer's blockbuster
Viagra are safe and effective in treating impotence, new research
shows.
