If memory serves me correctly, they sold stock in early 1997 at $20, which is where most of their cash came from. I suspect they saw a good opportunity to enlarge their bank account without major dilution. I don't think they ever had real plans for the money.

While I like the idea of a big bank balance for any downturn, which they already are in, they can buy back all the recently issued shares at half price. The only problem I see is that the $20 investors might scream bloody murder !!!!

This stock badly needs a growth story. SGI is kaput. They need to cozy up to SUNW; HWP and CPQ/DEC quickly to the extent there is still room at the table.
