Forthose of you who wanted the latest from Indonesia...the US Embassy url with the latest "travel advisory".
My best,

Indonesia - Travel Warning
May 27, 1998
The Department of State advises all American citizens to defer travel to Indonesia, including Bali. The security situation in Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia has improved but remains unsettled and is not yet at a point where the return of Americans is recommended. Any Americans in Indonesia should employ caution and avoid large crowds, demonstrations, and other activities that could place them inadvertently at risk.

Employees of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya in non-emergency positions as well as all dependents have departed Indonesia as ordered by the Department of State. They will remain in evacuation status until the security situation further stabilizes.

Because of the possibility of robbery and two confirmed instances of expatriates being killed after entering taxis, Americans in Jakarta who require taxis are advised to engage a taxi from a major hotel queue or by calling a taxi company, rather than hailing one on the street. American citizens in Indonesia should register with the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, (tel. 011-62-21-344-2211), the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya (tel. 011-62-31-568-2287), or the U.S. Consular Agency in Bali (tel. 011-62-361-233-605).

Updated information is available from the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta or through the Embassy's home page at usembassyjakarta.org.
