--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1998--Applied Innovation Inc. (Nasdaq:AINN), today announced that its AI 4800 Remote Access Server, designed to relieve telephone voice network congestion and provide advanced functionality for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), has completed Bellcore testing and analysis of its SS7 signaling capability. Test results that discuss the product's SS7 capabilities will be available later this month for potential buyers and users.
"Bellcore SS7 testing and analysis is a major milestone in our continuing efforts to make the AI 4800 the first AI product with fully functional and tested SS7 signaling," said Cory A. Grant, General Manager of Applied Innovation Inc.'s Access Products Group. "From the outset, we realized the importance this technology holds for the future of our business. However, in the rush to embrace this methodology, there is warranted concern that SS7 will be unleashed without being fully tested. That is why we have taken the time and made the effort to have the AI 4800's SS7 functionality rigorously tested by Bellcore. We consider them the ultimate authority for testing and verifying SS7 implementations."

The advantages of SS7 for both telecommunications service providers and for ISPs are substantial. The intelligence inherent in SS7 makes it possible to use a single call methodology without the need to provide signaling within the voice connection or by another signaling channel. The end result is a reduction in the cost of call control, while increasing the usable voice capacity out of the central office switch without expensive switch upgrades.

"Because of the sensitive nature of the SS7 network," continued Grant, "we wanted our product to undergo the same rigorous evaluation that Bellcore performs for SSPs, STPs and SCPs." The AI 4800 is part of a total Data Services Access Multiplexer (DSAM) solution set designed to provide a full range of services to CLECs, ILECs, CAPs, and ISPs to alleviate congestion and data management problems on the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Through use of AI 4800 features (dynamic call routing, call setup, and collection of ISP specific traffic data), efficient trunk usage and new revenue-generating services are available for Telcos and carriers.

"Because SS7 is a critical component of modern networks, there is little tolerance for equipment or system flaws," said Richard Ferrise, General Manager of Bellcore's Switching and Signaling Analysis Services. "Rigorous testing of SS7 protocol and feature implementations is critical to provide high-quality product deployment. We are deeply committed to helping suppliers like AI identify problems early on in their product development cycle so they may deliver the highest quality product to market."

Bellcore is known worldwide for its objectivity and technology leadership in providing suppliers third-party testing and analysis services. With its extensive testing facilities configured and equipped to provide a complete multi-vendor network operating environment, Bellcore has tested almost all the major switching and signaling systems deployed in North America, and has been a major force in helping to assure the quality of today's PSTN.

The Access Products Group of Applied Innovation Inc. is an industry leader in developing and supplying Central Office-grade network solutions to complex telecommunications management problems. Through the successful integration of innovative technology combined with the extensive telecom knowledge and experience of its people, AI's Access Products Group develops cost-effective, scaleable and comprehensive solutions for telecommunications providers and the customers that they serve.
