StorageTek Delivers Latest Fibre Channel Disk Arrays; StorageTek's OPENstorage 9140 and 9145 Deliver State-of-the-Art Connectivity

LOUISVILLE, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1998--StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp., NYSE:STK), the preeminent provider of network computing storage, today announced additions to its Fibre Channel disk array family.

StorageTek's new OPENstorage(TM) 9140 Disk Array and the OPENstorage 9145 RAID System have full (100 MB/second) Fibre Channel implementations from the server through the disk drives, allowing virtually unlimited scalability in performance, capacity and reliability. As StorageTek moves to offer optimal connectivity products for storage area networks (SANs), its application-centric OPENstorage 9140 and 9145 products deliver proven and reliable online disk offerings to customers looking for best of-breed Fibre Channel storage solutions.

Both the OPENstorage 9140 and 9145 products enable customers to benefit from greater storage flexibility because pools of data are stored by application requirements. Customers using the OPENstorage 9140 and 9145 are no longer limited by storage bandwidth when deploying data intensive applications, such as multimedia and data warehousing, and can easily migrate from their existing technology to StorageTek's advanced Fibre Channel disk products. The OPENstorage 9140 and 9145 products are both supported by StorageTek's StorageNet(TM) family of Fibre Channel connectivity products.

StorageTek is becoming the storage network provider of choice as companies move toward heterogeneous, centrally-managed storage environments," said Mark Davis, vice president of marketing for StorageTek's Multiplatform Business Group. "StorageTek's 9140 and 9145, combined with our connectivity, tape libraries, software, and services provide customers with optimized networked storage solutions enabling them to keep pace with changes in their business environment."

About the OPENstorage 9140

StorageTek's OPENstorage 9140 Disk Array allows customers to implement a full Fibre Channel JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) storage solution, and protect investments by providing a seamless upgrade to StorageTek's full RAID OPENstorage 9145. The 9140 is a flexible, online disk array that enables consolidation of client/server storage or allows for the deployment of centrally managed, distributed storage pools tailored to specific application requirements. Using 100 MB/second Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop technology, the 9140 enables companies to adapt to future growth requirements.

About the OPENstorage 9145

StorageTek's OPENstorage 9145 RAID Subsystem completes a robust line of SCSI, Ultra-SCSI, and Fibre Channel disk solutions, offering customers a wide array of disk options to meet business needs. The 9145 is a full Fibre Channel product that includes dual active Fibre Channel loops to the host and dual active Fibre Channel loops to the disk drives. This optimized connectivity elevates performance and scalability to new heights. Using dual Fibre Channel loops at 200 MB/second on the front and back ends, as well as reaching up to 120 disks per each back end loop pair, the 9145 boasts higher performance and data throughput per each storage pool.

Pricing and Availability

StorageTek's OPENstorage 9140 Disk Array is available immediately and pricing begins at $18,000 US. StorageTek's OPENstorage 9145 RAID System will be available in June 1998 and pricing begins at $92,000 US. Both products will be sold worldwide through StorageTek's direct and indirect sales channels.
