Where the danger lies in the future is the economic power MSFT has to keep adding things to the OS to preclude someone from even attempting to round up capital to develop something.

Interesting statement. So Microsoft has/will corner the market which inevitably leads to stagnation and a dearth of future innovations?

Where this falls apart, though, is that the technological change of pace is now exponential

Another interesting statement, and one that contradicts the premise of the above. So which is the greater possible constraint to future growth in IT, Microsofts dominant position or the "benevolent" regulators and controllers residing in Washington DC and various state capitols? Should be a no-brainer.
