UniView Technologies Corp. and Lucent Technologies Initiate Collaborative Convergence Project
Companies lead next-generation communication by developing Web telephone
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 1998-- uniView Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:UVEW - news) and Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - news) have combined resources to make information and communication as easy as using the telephone and watching television. The collaborative project -- the companies' first since signing a joint cooperation agreement in March -- will bring advanced Web telephony capabilities to interactive television and Internet device markets via Lucent's Inferno Network Software Solution organization.
The new high-performance platform, expected to be available to uniView and Lucent customers ar ound third quarter 1998, will enable simple, rapid Internet access and e-mail, as well as contact storage and management, digital answering with indicator light, call waiting and caller ID capabilities. The StrongARM(tm) Web telephone reference design and Inferno(tm) software platform will be combined with uniView's on-line service, support, server-based e-mail and chat capabilities to deliver a flexible, advanced communication tool for integration into Internet device applications such as Web telephones, Internet set-top boxes, network computers and Internet-enabled TVs.

In addition to the Inferno software platform, the innovative Web telephone product will incorporate industry-leading hardware and software technology such as a the SA-1100 microprocessor; touch sensitive screen; 640x480 full VGA LCD monitor; two-line, full-duplex, hands-free speaker phone; serial port for easy PC connectivity; wireless keyboard; and a 33.6Kbps modem.
Under the agreement, uniView will drive the development, delivery and licensing of the Web telephone and related Internet service support, while serving as a key provider of information services for uniView and Lucent customers requiring interactive solutions. Lucent will provide its Web telephone reference design and operating system for incorporation into the new platform and also will provide an additional targeted customer base for marketing and licensing efforts.
