Oh, well, now for some fairly accurate news fron Reuters: <Picture> <Picture: reuters>INTERVIEW-Foreign mkts drive Dell strategy ------------------------------------------------------------------------ By Neal Boudette LANGEN, Germany, June 3 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp DELL.O said on Wednesday it expected Europe to drive growth this year, and was counting on expansion into China and South America to add $1 billion or more to sales in the next several years. "We expect Europe to be the fastest growing part of the world for us this year and a very large part of our business," Vice Chairman Morton Topfer told Reuters in an interview. "We are the third-largest PC company in Europe and I expect there's a good chance we will be number two this quarter." Chairman and founder Michael Dell said: "I think you will see Dell grow in Europe several times faster than the market this year." Dell currently holds 8.3 percent of the European market. European sales in the fiscal quarter that ended May 3 totalled more than $1 billion, climbing 62 percent. Topfer also said he was comfortable with analyst estimates that fiscal 1999 sales would rise to between $17 and $18 billion, from more than $12.3 billion in the year ended February 1. Non-U.S. markets, which account for only 35 percent of sales now, should keep Dell growing rapidly, Topfer said. Later this year, Dell plans to open a plant in China that will begin selling PCs directly in a country where Topfer sees great potential. "China is now a two million-unit market and it's growing 40 to 50 percent a year. In two or three years, I think it could be one of the top five countries in the world," he said. "China is less than $100 million in business for us today, but it can be a billion-dollar market for us," he said. Similarly, Dell plans to build a plant in Brazil next year to lead a push into South America. "South America probably has the potential to be a billion-dollar market, too," Topfer said. "The market is growing 20 to 25 percent a year and Dell has almost no presence there now." The Austin, Texas, company currently sells PCs through distributors in most of South America.
