Minor correction to your "for every buyer there's a seller" paradigm.


Often the other half of a retail transaction is a Market Maker. This is not a true hue and cry bid-matching auction situation. When you buy a stock, the chances are very good that you are buying from a MM, and not from some other retail shareholder who has decided to sell.


Thus each buy-sell transaction actually gets double-counted (at least).
