Rudedog, thanks for a very interesting analysis. One point you made that I don't understand is:

I don't see any evidence of that. What benefits have you seen? How can you reduce the supply chain risk by holding inventory, apart from the obvious ones of having inventory to act as a buffer against shortages or increasing component prices? In other words, if Compaq's advantage comes from being able to buy at lower prices due to increased buying power isn't this advantage compromised by the necessity to inventory components (so that large POs are put together) when prices are falling and technology is advancing rapidly?
