The plan is copper, using xDSL. The ambiguous reference to leap-frogging is Sprint's contention that they will add value to the loop by using ATM as an application concentration technology along with bundled bandwidth mgt and pricing. Others offering just dry copper don't add value, according to Sprint.

In response to the question of ION and ADSL:

About halfway down the page in this link, a Sprint executive talks about how they plan to wire the last mile to the home. It is essentially ADSL purchased at wholesale from local providers.

Steve, as I understand it, & someone please correct me if I am wrong, Sprint, the RBOCs ect...connect to the home via xDSL which is the local phone line. Does xDSL require a 'digital modem'? Currently this technology competes with MRVs product offerings, which are geared to enable the buildouts of the cable companies, ala TCI's & Time Warner, Jones, ect...TCI's, @Home connects via a cable modem (is this a digital modem?) via the cable into the house. Is MRV going to produce 'digital modems' for perhaps TWI's RoadRunner? Or, could we gain access to the xDSL camp? Maybe even both...that would be nice.
