SEMI-OFF-TOPIC: Game Consoles

I'm not really very knowledgeable about these things. The last one I bought was a Mattel Intellivision (yes, I am OLD). I wanted to get an idea of what the current and immediate future consoles have in store as far as multiplayer features. My guess is that they currently only support multiple controllers running off a single console, with a single monitor (TV).

Has anyone yet incorporated or have plans to incorporate features like multiple consoles connected together similar to null modem connections, or a modem-like setup where you can "call" someone with a console? I know that the GameBoy can make some kind of direct connection, but I'm asking about the class of consoles that we might consider "competition." Thanks!
