Here's the press release: Wednesday June 3, 2:33 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release Three-Five Systems Inc. Begins LCD Module Pre-Production in China Plant TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1998--Three-Five Systems Inc. (NYSE:TFS - news) announced that its new production facility near Beijing, China, has manufactured its first LCD modules in pre-production volumes. The complex modules, which include liquid crystal displays, drivers and related components, rolled off the line in less than 90 days after the first production equipment was delivered to the leased facility. ''Several hundred units were built so that we could validate the manufacturing process,'' said Vincent C. Hren, vice president of operations. ''A number of these finished units are currently on their way to our Tempe labs where they will undergo accelerated life testing and analysis.'' After leasing the 27,000 square foot plant in February, Three-Five Systems was given ''fast-track'' status under an industrial development program sponsored by the China Academy of Sciences and The National High Technology Science Park. It allowed the company to streamline the process of securing business licenses and other documentation required to begin manufacturing. Two complete production lines have been set up, Hren said. One is fully operational and produced the initial test units. The second line will become operational later this month. While the production equipment was being installed and calibrated, a staff of more than 100 production personnel and engineers was hired and trained under the direction of Dwight Nordstrom, vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific. ''All of the production personnel underwent an intense, three-week training program, and a number of line supervisors were sent to our production facility in Manila for additional training,'' Nordstrom said. The company's Manila plant employs 1500 people working on 14 production lines. About 20 percent of the current staff in Beijing are engineers, half of whom hold graduate or post-graduate degrees, he said. Three-Five Systems Inc. specializes in designing, developing and manufacturing liquid crystal display (LCD) and light emitting diode (LED) components and systems for a variety of industrial, communications, medical, consumer and office automation applications.
